Dragons have long been a staple of myth, legend, and frankly… band rooms across the country. However, now, instead of slaying them… are after something different! Go on an epic adventure to “Tame the Dragon,” and control the skies with this fantastic new work for beginning band by composer Tyler Arcari.

Program Notes

Dragons have long captured the imagination of storytellers and audiences alike (and just a few composers too…). They are majestic, fearsome, and awe-inspiring, often symbolizing both power and mystery. In “Dragon Tamer,” I sought to encapsulate the dual nature of these mythical beings—both terrifying and enchanting—through a vivid musical narrative. Much like the heroes in my favorite fantasy games, this composition invites performers and listeners to embark on a daring quest, where they might confront dragons not with fear, but with courage and curiosity.

“Dragon Tamer” is more than just a musical adventure; it is also a celebration of music education and the incredible work done by educators like Ellen Ellis. Commissioned specifically for Monticello Middle School’s beginning band, this piece aims to inspire young musicians to explore their imaginations and bring their own stories to life through music. I am deeply grateful to all the music educators who nurture creativity and passion in their students. Your dedication is a beacon that lights the path for future generations of musicians.
