What Metal Really Brings
A metal mouthpiece is most often made of brass, sometimes stainless steel or silver- or gold-plated brass. Its density and rigidity influence two measurable things: how the reed behaves against the table, and the feel in the mouth.
In practice, musicians who play metal generally describe a more direct sound, punchier on the attack, with superior projection in large ensembles. The sound seems to come out louder for the same effort, useful in big band or amplified jazz funk settings.
Metal also has a concrete downside: the feel in the mouth is cold and hard, especially at low temperatures. Playing outdoors in winter with a metal mouthpiece is uncomfortable.
Most metal mouthpieces also have a wider tip opening than their hard rubber equivalents, that's not a property of metal itself, it's simply the design tradition associated with the material.
What Hard Rubber Really Brings
Hard rubber is vulcanized natural rubber. It's been the dominant material in mouthpiece making since the 19th century, and the vast majority of reference mouthpieces, Meyer, Vandoren Optimum, Selmer S80, JodyJazz HR Custom Dark, are made of it.
Its main advantage is sound. Musicians describe a rounder, warmer tone, with more complexity in the low harmonics. Hard rubber vibrates slightly less than metal under the reed's action, and many players find the sound breathes more, particularly in pianissimo dynamics.
Hard rubber is also more comfortable in the mouth: it adapts to body temperature, making it more pleasant during long sessions or outdoor concerts in cool weather.
Its weak point: hard rubber ages. It can yellow or grey over time (surface oxidation that doesn't affect sound properties), and it's more vulnerable to impact than metal.

What Blind Tests Reveal
A fair question: if you remove the mouth feel and the visuals, can you really hear the difference between a metal mouthpiece and a hard rubber one?
Blind tests conducted on musicians and listeners show nuanced results. Musicians themselves perceive a difference, but the gap is often smaller than subjective descriptions suggest. Listeners, for their part, often struggle to consistently identify the material.
What this means in practice: the material matters, but it doesn't matter as much as the tip opening, facing length, or chamber geometry. A metal mouthpiece with a tight opening can sound less bright than a wide-open hard rubber one.
Which Material for Your Musical Style?
For jazz, both materials work. The vast majority of jazz saxophonists use hard rubber for acoustic styles (bebop, ballads, gypsy jazz) and metal for amplified ones (jazz funk, smooth jazz, big band with sound reinforcement). It's not an absolute rule, Coltrane played metal, Rollins alternated between both.
For classical music and concert band, hard rubber is the near-universal standard. The reference mouthpieces in this context (Selmer S80, S90, Vandoren Optimum) are all hard rubber.
For beginners, hard rubber (or resin) is recommended, not for sound reasons, but for practical ones: it's more comfortable and more forgiving of pressure and embouchure variations during learning. Durability and Care: The Practical Differences
Metal holds up better to physical impact. It cleans easily with warm water, handles temperature changes better, and doesn't yellow over time.
Hard rubber needs a bit more attention. Rinse with warm water after every session (never hot water, it can warp the material), dry with a soft cloth, store with the mouthpiece cap to protect the table. A well-cared-for hard rubber mouthpiece lasts just as long as a metal one.
Resin (Yamaha 4C, Selmer Prologue) is a third common material for student mouthpieces. It combines the lightness of metal with the comfort of hard rubber, with superior dimensional stability.
